We all love sagas, like Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, and The Avengers. It’s interesting and insightful to see how characters and plots develop over time.
For example, who knew that Luke Skywalker would go from drinking blue milk with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru to saving the galaxy from certain doom? And how can we forget brave Frodo, who went from hanging out with his friends in The Shire to going head-to-head against Sauron.
Well, here at Devolutions we also have a saga. No, it doesn’t involve Death Stars or mind-controlling rings. But it does involve our suite of products. To simplify this grand tale (which is based on many true stories), let’s imagine a user named Joe, who is a Sysadmin with a common problem: he has way too many RDP connections to deal with, and it’s driving him crazy.
Part 1 – The RDM Awakens
Joe discovers Devolutions after searching for a solution to control and manage his many RDP connections. His attention turns to Remote Desktop Manager Free, because it offers so many enhanced features — and, as the name promises, it’s free! That means he can download and start using it immediately, instead of asking for permission from his boss (which could take a while and may not be granted).
Joe is also impressed by the fact that, unlike a lot of free software out there, RDM Free is not nagware, donationware, trialware or crippleware. It’s a legitimate, standalone solution for IT pros and is constantly being updated. For example, the latest version, RDM Free 2019.1, introduced Credential Entries, Credential Links, Credential Inheritance, Macro Script Tools, Dropbox Data Source, and Play List (to automate multi-step workflows).
Joe also checks out some reviews, and learns that RDM is rated 4.7/5 at G2 Crowd, 4.8/5 at Gartner Peer Insights, and 4.5/5 at Capterra where one Sysadmin calls it “the holy grail of remote desktop software”.
Part 2 – Joe and the Order of the RDM Enterprise
After a little while, Joe’s boss notices that productivity and performance has increased, and customers and end users are happier. Naturally, she wants to scale these benefits across the group, and decides to upgrade to Remote Desktop Manager Enterprise which is designed for teams (unlike RDM Free, which is designed for individual IT pros).
Joe’s boss — along with the company’s CFO and CEO — is also happy to learn that RDM Enterprise is available in multiple licensing models (named user, site, country and global). As such, the company can scale up or down accordingly and optimize the budget.
Part 3 – The Return of Wayk Now
After a while, Joe and his IT colleagues — who are all happily using RDM Enterprise — realize that they need a remote support and desktop tool to make end user and customer support more efficient and effective. They check out popular tools like TeamViewer, Bomgar and LogMeIn. While they like all of these for different reasons, there is one gigantic Death-Star-sized obstacle: they are all very expensive!
That’s when Joe remembers that Devolutions also offers a remote support and desktop tool called Wayk Now. Just like RDM, there are two versions: Free and Enterprise, a much more affordable option than other commercial-grade tools. After doing some research, Joe and his team choose Wayk Now Enterprise, because they need to launch multiple sessions and set up unattended access.
Part 4 – DPS: First Contact
Things at Joe’s company are going well. Business is booming, market share is expanding, and new hires are being added to the IT team. However, this growth is also creating some worries around password management and securing privileged accounts. There are compliance concerns, and fears of what a data hack or breach would do to the company’s reputation.
And so, the IT team does some brainstorming and research, and discovers that Devolutions Password Server is the ideal on-premises solution for controlling access to privileged accounts and managing remote sessions. What’s more, they like the fact that DPS is supported by the same experts behind RDM Enterprise and Wayk Now Enterprise. They know they will get quality, responsive help whenever they need it.
Part 5 – DPH: End Game
The hiring in Joe’s company continues across the business. While this is boosting productivity, it is also increasing concerns about poor security hygiene. Joe and his boss are especially worried, because 81% of hacking incidents involve stolen or weak passwords.
To close the gap and avoid a costly and maybe even catastrophic breach, the company implements Devolutions Password Hub to vault and manage the company’s non-technical (business and admin) users, while they continue with Devolutions Password Server for technical users.
May the Force Be with Joe
Now, Joe’s boss is so pleased that the company is striking a balance between keeping critical assets secure and enabling non-technical users to be productive and efficient, that she’s given him a big promotion, a larger office, a company car, and even a “Waykee” Wayk Now plush mascot. Joe has also joined Devolutions’ Force VIP User Community, where he is climbing the leaderboard, and cashing in his points for great free stuff.
The IT chaos is controlled, peace and prosperity are restored to the galaxy, and Joe is a legendary hero. Was there any doubt?
